First off, any sports game will either have great controls, or a system that simply doesn’t work. As usual, Konami has designed a system that is relatively easy to get used to – and is very fluid during gameplay. The new right-stick method for free-kicks allows the player to curl the ball with a satisfying amount of curve control, allowing those who master the craft to attempt some truly stunning goals. The control scheme isn’t as natural-feeling as its FIFA counterpart, but in the end it’s a competent system that does what it needs to – that is, it simply works, and does it well.

The artificial intelligence of players on the pitch is a step-ahead of FIFA, and somehow manages to keep games challenging on all scales of difficulty. Players can expect teams to make more attacking decisions, strikers to make runs, and midfielders to adapt their positioning when need be – which gives each game a unique taste as the drama unfolds. The only flaw here is the goalkeepers, who fall far behind on the scale of computerized intelligence. They’ll often flop the ball or maintain terrible positioning – and are almost never smart when it comes to freekicks.

The graphics of Pro Evolution Soccer as simply outstanding, with players and pitch alike shining with a gleaming edge – under the lights during a night-time UEFA match. There’s something about the atmosphere that is impeccably polished, but once each piece of the artwork is forced to move, gamers will begin to see cracks in the system. Simply put, the player animations are much less fluid than their FIFA counterparts – often resulting in awkward stumbles and unrealistic physics. When gamers compare the generic stumble animation from PES 2012 after a tackle to the dynamic, ragdoll-like collisions of FIFA, it’s easy to see that PES 2012 needs a massive update in this regard.

Without a doubt one of the best features in Pro Evolution Soccer is the Master League, which rises above and beyond what one would expect in the management side of things. As gamers attempt to manage a team to glory and get the best out of developing players over the years, unique problems will arise behind the scenes. Staff and players will approach the gamer’s desk with needs and request – and it’s necessary to balance out their needs with the stature of the club and its goals. Konami does well in actually displaying conversations as they happen, and while this is a much appreciated focus, the soundless, idle-animations of the characters as they talk is a little off-putting – considering there are no voices. Prepare for many an awkward silence as subtitles appear on the screen and mouths move. If gamers can get past these aspects, the Master League has a ton of depth that will manage to keep players happy for hours and hours of playing time.

Licensing is one area that Konami has long been behind in. FIFA has many of the top-tier clubs – and even entire leagues (looking at you, MLS) in exclusivity contracts. Only two out of the twenty Premier League clubs appear as themselves with real-life players – the rest being knockoff clubs like ‘Manchester Blue’ for Manchester City, fully staffed with the proper players under the fictional clubs. Thankfully, PES 2012 did manage to secure the rights to the UEFA Champions League, giving them one area where the FIFA falls short. However, with only three fully licensed leagues, fans that are used to a deep selection of clubs, full of real players, will be largely disappointed.

PES 2012 delivers some great matches and gameplay. Whether playing with a friend or against the computer, Konami have crafted a pretty good successor to 2011, but it’s certainly not a flawless product – Konami struggles to keep pace with the highly innovative FIFA franchise (read our review for the latest FIFA), and the lack of basic features like a deeper animation pool and dynamic collisions emphasize this point. However, they’re ahead in key areas like player AI and the management mode, maintaining that Konami is still in the competition – though perhaps as an underdog.

Empires & Allies Survival Mode: Everything you need to know

 The amount of features available in Empires & Allies now is almost getting ridiculous. Zynga recently introduced Survival Mode to the game through the War Room building, and it's said to pay tribute to the classic arcade game days. The feature, which pits players against wave after wave of enemies using just one squad of five units, is on a slow roll-out (of course). But once it becomes available to you, it's time to place and build the War Room, which requires zero materials to complete.

Once you finish the War Room for a few Energy, click on it to take your first crack at survival mode. Sergeant Cross will prompt you to choose five units wisely, as the feature essentially puts normal combat on loop, but without the breaks. That means all weaknesses and strengths are accounted for, so choose a varied squad. After you successfully defeat each wave, you'll earn rewards.

You can pause the Survival Mode battle at any time, but the only way to start over is to lose. But when you do lose all of your five units (which are reportedly gone forever) to the hordes of enemies that steadily grow more deadly, you're given the option to continue from the wave you failed on for 10 Empire Points. Of course, the rewards you would have scored are dangled in front of you as a classic timer ticks down. There's not much else to the Survival Mode--at least it serves as a diversion from the all but defunct Campaign Mode.

Empires & Allies: Embark on the Lucky Mermaid Mini-Campaign

If there is one thing social gamers like--other than free stuff, of course--it's choices. It looks like Zynga has realized this in its recent games, and now Empires & Allies is taking on that mantra with the new Little Mermaid Mini-Campaign. While on paper, this is nothing more than a series of Goals, players are given a few choices on their path to the final reward: The Golden Mermaid.

Starting from the very beginning, you're given to choice to approach this new timed mini-campaign (about two weeks) in either combat-oriented or social or construction-centric missions. Frankly, the latter already sounds kind of boring, so I'd personally recommend taking the former path.

Each path consists of five Goals with one choice along the way. But Zynga reminds players to choose carefully, as there is no turning back after you make your first and second decisions along the way.

This mini-campaign appears in your game just as The Little Mermaid anchors on the coast of your empire, and clicking on it reveals a new campaign map with several Goals. According to the developer, these Goals have more lucrative rewards than standard ones, and the final prize--should you complete all five Goals on time--is The Golden Mermaid. This is certainly not a combat unit, but is a decoration said to grant players with booming profits.

This is a brand new approach to releasing content for the E&A team, and plans are to release more mini-campaigns like this one. So, of course, the team is looking for feedback on the forums. Here's a personal suggestion: Lose the social-centric missions and focus on the combat--perhaps even player vs player in Battle Blitz.

Empires & Allies Red Tide Rising Goals: Everything you need to know

It looks like our very own little Cold War is about to erupt in Empires & Allies, as Zynga has introduced new Goals to the game to coincide with the Red Tide Rising item event. This long, limited edition series of a whopping seven Goals will send you on a hunt for the mysterious Element Z that ... doesn't seem to go much of anywhere. Hey, at least you'll score a sweet Tank and other rewards for your hard work. Here's everything you need to know about the Red Tide Rising Goals in E&A:

Come Together

• Harvest from 8 Neighbor Farms
• Revive 6 Neighbor Farms
• Collect from 20 Neighbor Houses

This is all about visiting friends. In fact, considering each friend visit grants you five friendly actions, it will take at least six visitations to complete this Goal. And once you do, an EMP power-up awaits as your reward.

 Capture Evidence

• Collect 5 Defecting Scientists

In this simple Goal, all you need to do is ask your friends for this item, which we'd imagine you're all familiar with by now. Once you do, enjoy a free 1,000 Coins.

The More the Merrier

• Have 2 New Friends Play E&A

Alright, now this is just downright mean. Apparently, it's up to you to be an ambassador for Zynga's strategy game. You must invite two friends who have yet to play E&A, so have fun with that. Hey, you could always just make two mock accounts, have them befriend your real one, install the game via an invite from the real account and finally delete them. But you didn't hear that from us. Your reward for this Goal is a limited edition Sputnik Statue.

Tooling Up

• Have 10 Army Upgrades
• Build 8 Army Units
• Place 8 Army Units

To upgrade your Army or Land units, use the Army Research Lab (find out how in our guide right here). Then, the next two Goals are simple: Just build some throwaway units like Cadet Soldiers, which cost 100 Coins apiece, and place them. For completing these tasks, enjoy a free 100 Oil.

Release the Hounds

• Use Upgraded Army Units to Destroy 22 Enemy Units
• Use Upgrade Army Units to Inflict 1,000 Damage

This Goal doesn't dictate where exactly you have to destroy or damage said units, so try just entering a low-level Campaign battle and wreaking havoc on Captain Krunsch. You can also retreat from battles to avoid losing any of your precious upgraded Army units. This Goal, once completed, will reward you with 100 Wood.

Disposal!

• Collect 5 Bomb Disposal Robots

This simple Goal requires that you ask friends for the Robots, so ask away and be done with it. You'll score another 1,000 Coins for completing this Goal.

Shared Meal!

• Harvest 24 Red Onions
• Harvest 12 Neighbors' Farms
• Collect 250 Oil

To harvest 24 Red Onions, you will need a total of 9,216 Coins, and each crop takes 1 day and eight hours to complete. To harvest 12 Neighbor Farms, you will have to visit at least three friends. Your reward for completing this Goal is a limited edition Tank, the SU-122 with an impressive 200 Health.

Empires & Allies Battle Blitz launches global PvP (and special prizes)

Finally, Zynga's answer to the growing legion of hardcore strategy games on Facebook, Empires & Allies, puts on the brass knuckles, so to speak.
